In 1978, something really strange happened – The Star Wars Holiday Special. This little known and little watched holiday special aired on CBS one year after the initial release of Star Wars, and then never again saw the light of day. It is probably the worst holiday TV special ever, and definitely the worst Star Wars themed show that has ever aired on television.

So why talk about it? It was shockingly ahead of its time – and very accurately depicted virtual reality porn.  The show was set on the planet of Kashyyyk, the home of Chewbacca, and introduced the audience to Chewie’s family. For Christmas, Chewbacca’s father is given a present that’s “hard to explain” – difficult because virtual reality technology in 1978 was unfathomable. But, in hindsight – we can now roll tape and clearly see that this is a virtual reality headset – and Chewie’s dad is getting his rocks off watching some porn. Very progressive for family television in 1978.

Check it out for yourself. The first couple minutes are painful; skip to 2:15 to get to the VR porn. It would be very impressive if you could stomach watching all 9:35 of this video. Just think, the full TV special was 2 hours long.
