Twitter Plans To Purge 10m Users For Porn Tweets

Well… another week and another ‘Twitter is on the cusp of making a terrible decision’ story. Thanks heavens the braintrust at Twitter keep on doing this kind of thing or we might run out of things to write about!

It’s not been a stellar couple of weeks for the social media platform all told. After publishing a doom-laden revenue forecast that caused shares to tumble like a drunk down a hill, Nielsen pulled a host of ads from the network after they were discouraged by how easily and quickly it was placed against and with pornographic tweets.

So what’s the next (il)logical step? If Business Insider is to be believed it’s scorching up to 10 million users from its own Earth simply for posting “too much” porn. SunTrust Robinson Humphrey analyst Robert Peck believes that the number of porn-based accounts – or at least those tweeting such content out – is doing more damage to the site than anything else.

But with Twitter reeling from news that user growth is much slower than expected, forcing 10m users from the site may play havoc with a share price already starting to squeal and bleed like a stuck pig. Twitter’s CEO – the aptly-named Dick Costolo – will be under pressure to deliver shareholders with positive profit and user-based news while trying to balance the needs of the platform’s varied and constant users and audience.

Twitter have shown their fangs on a couple of occasions in 2015. A leaked internal memo discussed how poorly the company had dealt with abuse and threats to users with promises to revamp. Not long after Meerkat was shown the door in no short order to make way for Periscope.

… but – as we’ve seen time and again – money talks, and it’ll be porn that walks.
