Can it really have been 20 years? Yes, yes it can. On September 22, 1994, one of the sit-com genre’s greatest pop-cultural icons was born, airing on NBC and introducing the world to the six characters we would all, mostly, grow to love over the next ten years: soppy, lovelorn Ross, the smarmy irony machine Chandler, uptight Monica, ditzy Rachel, hippie-dippy Phoebe and, of course, baloney meatball Joey. Now in syndication, Friends – created by David Crane and Marta Kauffman – was a massive hit, cementing its place in the public consciousness of folk all around the world, enthralled by the brilliantly played out will-they-won’t they/yes-they-did/will-they-do-it-again saga that was Ross and Rachel’s love affair, the madcap antics of Joey and Chandler’s flat-sharing life, Monica sleep with Magnum PI himself, The Moustache Selleck, all of it. We followed our six friends through all their ups and downs, laughing our asses off even in the sad moments. We knew them all so well that they were basically family.
