Forget 50 Shades of Grey, Watch These Instead

Sure, many women worldwide are waiting with baited breath for the release of the 50 Shades of Grey movie. But before 50 Shades made BDSM mainstream (or tried to at least), the world already had these awesome movies that spoke of kinky sex – and in a more believable way.

The movies always portray any kind of fetish as belonging to those who are mentally unstable or ‘damaged’ and 50 Shades does nothing to dispel the stereotype. The collective groan heard within the world of BDSM practitioners is hard not to miss, so in light of that, I’ve put together a list of movies that you should be watching instead of 50 Shades of Grey (or at least while waiting for the movie to come out):

This 2002 production also has a main male character named Grey, and a timid, brunette who he dominates. Coincidence? Perhaps. Who knows really? But unlike 50 Shades, where Christian Grey’s BDSM fetish pushed Anastasia away, in Secretary, it actually brings the two main characters together. BDSM is also depicted in a more realistic and a lot less, “OMG, he’s depraved!” kind of way. This is a fan favorite in the actual BDSM community.
9 ½ Weeks:
Probably the original 50 Shades, this is the movie that propelled Mickey Rourke to sex symbol status. This movie plays with the dynamics of power of control that is still potent in this day and age, plus, the scene where Rourke feeds Kim Basinger different things to eat is so hot, it makes food sexy.
Sex, Lies and Videotape:
James Spader is on a roll! Lest we forget in his younger years Spader used to be quite the heartthrob, here we have him opposite Andy McDowell in this movie about a young man who likes to film women discussing their sexuality.
What’s that? James Spader again? Yep! Master of kink, Spader is amazing in Crash, an adaptation of JG Ballard’s 1973 novel movie about fetishizing car crashes and the deep bonds behind it. Yes, it was a highly controversial movie during its time (and probably still is) but is still daring and worth a watch.
