It looks set to be a great summer if you’re into good cinematic fare. Here are 10 if the best movies to look out for this season…

Boyhood

With Patricia Arquette and Ethan Hawke. Directed by Richard Linklater. This movie caught my eye. The director hired a child actor 12 years ago and created this whole movie over that time. It’s amazing to have worked on a piece for so long. The story follows the growth of this kid from six years old until he’s 18. The trailer look pretty darn sweet. I hope it’s released in Spain! To be released in the USA July 11.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

I wasn’t going to put this on the list because everyone knows about this movie but I’m super excited for it. The trailer looks like it walks that fine line between a serious superhero movie and comedy. I can’t wait to reconnect with my childhood and see these guys come out of their shells again. Yes, I just referenced the song from the original movie. I think I might still have the cassette tape somewhere. To be releases on August 8.

The Giver

I remember seeing this book in the library when I was in school. I never picked it up to read it and now I wished I had. It seems a bit like Logan’s Run but I’m very interested. A future where everything seems idyllic but no it is not. Plus Meryl Streep is in it. How can you go wrong? To be released in the USA August 15.

Wish I Was Here

There are going to be obvious comparisons made to Garden State. I’m not ashamed to say that I loved that movie when it came out. I’m excited for this one. It’s seems to mix the soul searching of Garden State with some fun sci-fi sequences. If I remember correctly this movie raised a lot of its capital from a Kickstarter campaign. Crowdfunding works! To be released in the USA July 18

Mood Indigo

From the director of The Science of Sleep and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind comes this new film with Audrey Tautou. This movie seems just as quirky and romantic as Amelie and I can’t wait to see it. Now will they show it in Spain with English subtitles? I highly doubt it. Weep not for me but go see it for yourself when this hits theatres July 18.

Hercules

I’m very partial to the Kevin Sorbo movies and TV series so I’m a little skeptical about this movie. The CGI looks great but I hope there is more of a character study of Hercules. This movie is based on the graphic novel Hercules: The Thracian Wars so maybe it will be good. To be released July 25

Lucy

Scarlett Johansson in a Sci-Fi action movie. This story look quite interesting. A woman is kidnapped and implanted with a bag of drugs. The drugs start to leak into her system and she now has increasing access to her brain’s full capacity. What will happen next? Can we play God? To be released in the USA July 25

Magic In The Moonlight

Say what you will about Woody Allen but he can make some damn good movies. He always gets such a star-studded cast. I hope this is on par with Midnight In Paris. Colin Firth plays a man trying to debunk a psychic Emma Stone. Is she for real? I like that it seems to have some shades of Blithe Spirit. To be released July 25

A Most Wanted Man

I love spy thrillers. I was like a kid in a candy store with the original Jason Bourne movies. This looks like it will be on the same level. It also is one of Seymour Phillip Hoffman’s last movie roles so it has that going for it. To be released in the USA July 25

What If

Daniel Radcliffe, you sly dog you. You can do so much more than what you started doing and I love you for it. Having seen him on stage once I can say he’s a great actor and he really plays different characters. I’m excited to see him in this along with Adam Driver. A quirky ‘will-they-won’t-they?’ movie. I love it. To be released in the USA August 1.
