Maria del Mar

Maria del Mar

Maria del Mar is a writer and music promoter living in London. She has a passion for ’50s pin up girls, Latin American music and Barcelona sunsets.

When she’s not writing about stuff happening in the outside world or inside her own head, Maria is wholeheartedly committed to hedonism and the pursuit of beauty. Much of her life is lived at gigs and clubs through work and play, and as a consequence most of her dreams are lit with magenta stage lighting.

Maria has worked for some big international charities, and is interested in social justice and the way the developing world is portrayed in the West. She cut her journalistic teeth writing about really important things that are really hard to get most people to care about, like poverty, gender equality and climate change in the ‘developing’ world.

After a few years of playing it by the book and slogging her depressed guts out in the save-the-world camp, Maria decided the best thing she could do for her own sanity and the greater good was to pursue her writing, because it is when she is writing that she feels most at home, most in her element, most able to make a difference.

Maria is also a linguist, and has worked internationally in Spain and all over South and Central America, with the highlight being a stint writing (and dancing) in Havana, Cuba.

These days Maria writes about social issues, current affairs, sexuality and music. She is a massive fan of causing a stir with her writing, and if she told you some of the troublesome situations she’s rustled up with activist friends and colleagues in Europe, she’d have to kill you. She’s all about asking questions people are afraid to ask, and finding another side to the story that you don’t get from the mainstream media.

Maria has always been interested in combining arts and activism, because most people still find straight up politics pretty boring. She admires the work of people like Adbusters, The Space Hijackers and Anonymous. She thinks the world is a pretty fucked up place to be in, but of course enjoys the beauty in it every single day.
